Writer's on the Red Bench: A Brief History of the Snowboard with Peter Radacher and JG Gerndt

  • Vermont Ski & Snowboard Museum via ZOOM 1 South Main Street Stowe, VT 05672 United States (map)

Join author Peter Radacher and Vermont Ski and Snowboard Museum Hall of Fame Inductee, JG Gerndt on Thursday, December 2nd at 7:00 PM for our Virtual Writer's on the Red Bench; Boards, A Brief History of the Snowboard.

Peter’s collection of over 800 boards inspired him to write a book about the development of the snowboard. This comprehensive book is packed with pages of knowledge. Peter takes the reader on a journey starting in the 15th century and ending with the modern boards we ride today. Peter is now sharing this book, his labor of love, with the world.

JG Gerndt will join Peter for this discussion, intertwining his experiences and expertise on the topic into this presentation and discussion. It’s a real treat to have these two experts in the same “room” together. Join us for the journey!

Peter Radacher grew up at the base of Hochkeil Mountain in Austria’s Hochkönig region. As a child, he was a ski jumper but soon discovered snowboarding. For many years he competed in a variety of events and can still be found competing in banked slaloms. He trained as a snowboard instructor and studied Sports Management at the University of Innsbruck and Granada. Today he runs the family business, Arthurhaus-Radacher GmbH (now in the fifth generation), which consists of a hotel, hostel, ski area and provides recreational opportunities in all seasons. In addition, he also helps organize snowboarding events including the Hochkeil Banked Slalom, volunteers for the local mountain rescue team, and is also the founder of the Snowboard Museum which he runs out of pure passion.

John “JG” Gerndt is a 2019 VTSSM Hall of Fame Inductee. Before coming to Vermont and eventually settling in Stowe, JG grew up in New Jersey riding Snurfers, skateboards, and surfboards back in the 70s, and his love for sliding on snow shaped the rest of his life. He is best known for his role in designing revolutionary surf-inspired boards like the Fish, Malolo, Nug, and Resonator. He’s built boards for legendary riders like Terje Haakonsen, Kelly Clark, Danny Davis, Red Gerard, Chloe Kim, along with fellow Hall-of-Famers Jake and Donna Carpenter, Jeff Brushie, and Ross Powers (to name a few). JG still spends his winter days on snow, riding and testing a variety of boards in his continuous effort to enhance and advance the snowboarding world. Driven by passion and deep knowledge of the sport, JG assisted Peter in the creation of Boards, A Brief History of the Snowboard.

Peter will be joining us from Austria, JG from his home in Stowe, VT, and we hope you’ll tune in from wherever you find yourself on the evening of December 2nd.
